Press
Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Americans
to show Support for Dual Citizenship Proposal in Folketinget
COPENHAGEN,
February 11, 2009:
On February 19th the halls of Folketinget will be filled
with Americans, waving American, Danish, and EU flags.
"It is about
time that Americans, like myself, who live in Denmark, speak Danish, work, and
pay taxes have the right to Danish citizenship, without having to give up American
citizenship," says Larry Feinberg, an American who has been living in Denmark
for over twenty years and who has been working together with the grassroots organization
statsborger.dk to amend the restrictive Danish law.
Feinberg, who
is the Issues Chairperson for Democrats Abroad Denmark, is encouraging Americans
and other foreigners who live in Denmark, to meet up in front of Folketinget on
February 19th at 15:20.
From there, they will march into Folketinget together
and watch as the members of parliament debate the law proposal on dual citizenship.
As for whether or not the Danish members of parliament will be influenced by the
Americans, Feinberg is optimistic.
"I truly believe, due to the strong
alliance between Denmark and the United States, that the Danish politicians will
pay attention to the American presence."
Feinberg is also working with
Virginia Holst, an American citizen and member of Venstre, who is the former mayor
of Hvalsø, a town in Southern Zealand. Law proposal b55, which would amend the
Danish law to allow for dual citizenship, will be debated in Folketinget on Friday
February 19th at 16:00. It is being proposed by the Radikale Venstre.
